Pumping is hard work, but we know that it’s truly a labor of love. Whether you are returning to the office, trying to increase your supply, or just looking for a little more flexibility in your day, having the right breast pump can make all the difference.
That’s where the NaturalWave® Pump comes in. We designed this pump with two major goals in mind: to make your pumping sessions more comfortable and more efficient.
We’re here to help you get the most out of your pumping sessions, so you can get back to what matters most. Here are four techniques to use with your NaturalWave® pump to help boost your comfort and your supply.
4 Pumping Techniques with Your NaturalWave®
These four pumping techniques harness the NaturalWave® Technology, which mimics the gentle, fluttering tongue movements a baby makes at the end of a swallow. This unique motion isn't just about efficiency; it is about making your pumping sessions feel more natural and comfortable, so you can fully empty your breasts.
By adjusting how you use the different pump phases, you can tailor every session to what your body needs right now.
Power Pumping to Boost Supply
You may have heard of "cluster feeding," that intense period where a baby wants to nurse constantly. It’s nature’s way of signaling your body to make more milk. Power pumping mimics this natural pattern by rapidly emptying your breasts to trigger an increase in your supply.
It is important to remember that this isn't meant to replace your normal daily routine forever—it’s just a temporary tool to help enhance your supply when you need it. Be kind to yourself during this process; it takes time and dedication.
Power Pumping Step-by-Step
Find one uninterrupted hour in your day when you can relax. Grab a water bottle, a snack, and get comfortable, following this pattern:
-
Pump for 20 minutes using your normal pump settings, then rest for 10 minutes.
-
Switch to NaturalWave® Phase at a low suction level for 10 minutes. Don’t worry if little or no milk flows during this part; the stimulation is what counts. Then, rest for another 10 minutes.
-
Pump for another 10 minutes in NaturalWave® Phase at a low suction level.
-
Throughout the rest of the day, continue with your usual pumping schedule (for example, pumping for 15 minutes every 3 hours).
Mini Power Pump (Mid-Session Boost)
If a full hour of power pumping feels overwhelming or doesn't fit into your schedule, the Mini Power Pump is a great alternative. This technique uses those gentle vibrations to encourage more let-downs mid-session, nudging your supply without taking up too much extra time.
Mini Power Pumping Step-by-Step:
-
Start pumping as usual to get your milk flowing.
-
Midway through your normal session, switch to NaturalWave® Phase at a low suction level for 10 minutes. Again, it is okay if the flow is minimal here.
-
Return to the Expression Phase at your preferred suction level for 10 minutes.
-
Switch back to NaturalWave® Phase (low suction) for 10 minutes.
-
Finish with 10 minutes in the Expression Phase.
Mom-to-Mom Tip: Patience is key here. Results may take 2–4 days to become noticeable. Try to stick with this routine daily for about a week to notice an increase in your supply.
Comfort Pumping
We get it – nipple sensitivity can be a real challenge for a lot of moms, but pumping shouldn't be painful! If you are finding the standard suction too strong or irritating, your NaturalWave® Pump offers a gentler alternative. You can replace the standard Expression Phase with the NaturalWave® Phase at any time for a softer experience.
Comfort Pumping Step-by-Step:
-
Begin pumping as usual.
-
Once your milk is flowing, switch over to NaturalWave® Phase. You should feel a difference immediately.
-
Customize your session by using the NaturalWave® Phase for the entire session if that feels best, or alternate between it and the Expression Phase.
-
Listen to your body and adjust the suction to what feels good for you.
Trigger More Let-Downs & Finish Strong
Sometimes, you might notice your milk flow slows down before you feel fully empty your breasts. Or perhaps you just want to ensure you have drained the breast as much as possible to maintain a strong supply. This technique helps mimic a baby’s gentle, flutter-like sucking that often happens toward the end of a feed, signaling your body to let down that last bit of milk.
Finishing Strong Step-by-Step:
-
Start pumping as usual.
-
Watch the flow. When your milk flow begins to slow down (usually after 5–10 minutes), switch your pump to NaturalWave® Phase at a slightly lower suction level.
-
Pump for 3–5 minutes in this mode. This mimics the gentle, sleepy sucking of a baby finishing a feed.
-
Check out your progress. If no more milk flows after a few minutes, your session is complete.
