For pumping mamas, the essentials in your pump bag look a little different from what's in your diaper bag. Even for quick outings, having a well-stocked bag can make your pumping sessions a little smoother. Use our pumping bag checklist to help ensure you don’t leave anything behind.
1) Your Breast Pump and Power Source
This seems obvious, but in the morning rush, it is easy to forget. If your pump requires an outlet, verify that you have the A/C adapter. If you are using a battery-operated pump, ensure it’s fully charged or that you have a fresh set of batteries on hand.
2) A Complete Collection Kit (Plus Spares)
Pack all the mechanisms that make the pump work. This includes flanges, valves, diaphragms, collection bottles/cups. and tubing. Experienced pumping moms will tell you that valves are small and tricky. They like to hide in the bottom of the sink or tear unexpectedly. We highly recommend packing a spare set of valves. Having backups can save the day if a part gets lost or damaged while you are out.
3) Wet Hand Wipes
You won't always have access to a pristine sink with hot water and soap, so wet hand wipes or hand sanitizer can clean your hands in a pinch before handling pump parts.
4) Milk Storage Containers
Pack enough pump bottles for your pumping sessions, plus one extra in case. If space is tight in your bag, breastmilk storage bags are a great alternative. They lie flat, take up minimal space, and hold plenty of liquid gold. Don’t forget a permanent marker to date and label your milk if you plan to store it in a shared fridge at work.
5) A Cooler and Ice Packs
You have worked hard to express that milk, so keeping it safe is a top priority. Unless you have immediate access to a refrigerator, a compact cooler bag with frozen ice packs is essential for transporting your milk home safely.
6) Nursing Pads and Extra Clothing
Spills and leaks are just a reality of breastfeeding. Packing extra nursing pads can keep you dry and comfortable. We also suggest tossing a spare top or a lightweight cardigan into your bag. Having a backup outfit can give you peace of mind in case of leaks or spills.
7) A Wet Bag
Once you finish pumping, store the used parts in a safe place to keep them separate from the clean items in your bag. A sealable wet bag or a simple gallon-sized plastic bag works perfectly to contain moisture and keep your bag tidy until you get home to wash everything properly.
8) Healthy Snacks and Hydration
Making milk burns calories and requires plenty of fluids. Pack a water bottle to sip on during your session and stash some non-perishable, high-protein snacks like nuts, granola bars, or dried fruit. Keeping your energy up helps maintain your supply and keeps you feeling your best.
9) A Connection to Your Baby
Pumping can sometimes feel mechanical, especially when you are away from your little one. Many moms find that looking at a photo or video of their baby helps trigger let-down and makes the session feel more connected. You might even want to pack a worn onesie that smells like your baby to help stimulate that hormonal response. It’s a sweet reminder of exactly who you are doing this for.
You've got this, mama!
